RNA - Muslims in Nigeria held ceremonies to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain (AS) in more than sixty cities and towns in the country.
According to the Daily Trust website, the event was organized by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, and participants called for the release of "Shaykh Zekasaki", prominent Shiite cleric, who have been in jail for more than two years despite Abuja court order.
A spokesman for the Islamic Movement of Nigeria in a statement said that the Ashura ceremony was held peacefully, despite some measures taken by the security agencies that considered the gathering as ‘unrest’.
"The ceremony of Ashura is a unique opportunity to show the world that the Islamic Movement of Nigeria is free of violence, and if they allow us to exercise religious rituals, nothing will happen," the movement said in other part of its statement.
