Rasa - Egypt's military-installed interim government says a referendum on the country’s new draft constitution will be held next month.

Interim President Adly Mansour, called on the people in a televised speech to participate in the vote, noting that the referendum is to be held on January 14-15.

"I call upon you to vote in a referendum on the draft revised constitution on January 14 and 15," Mansour said on Saturday, adding, "[The constitution] has not reached the degree of perfection...but it is a historically important breakthrough for the nation."

He also praised the revised draft for the constitutional provisions on the "securing of human rights, freedoms and the balancing of powers."

"It is a good start on which to build the institutions of a democratic and modern state," the interim president said.

The new constitution was drafted after military-installed authorities revised the one written during the era of ousted president, Mohammed Morsi. Morsi, the first democratically-elected president of Egypt, was toppled by the army in early July.

Many are critical of the new law saying it retains the powers and privileges of the military. Commentators say the new constitution helps the Egyptian military to tighten its grip on power as it allows for the trial of civilians in military courts and contains a provision that could lead to an outright ban on Islamic parties.

The constitution makes illegal the formation of religious parties, as well as all activities carried out by those parties.

The Muslim Brotherhood has rejected the draft charter together with the rest of the army-led transition plan, calling it a product of a military coup.

The group also says that the constitution runs contrary to the objectives of the 2011 revolution that ended decades of rule by former dictator, Hosni Mubarak.

Tensions in Egypt have been running high since Morsi was ousted on July 3. Hundreds have lost their lives in the ensuing violence across the country.
